and yes, Santa

Mrs. Claus handing out candy canes,

and winning the raffle -which was a super cool train

fun was had by all!

End the day with a trip to Trader Joe's with Paul size grocery carts,

that gives us one happy boy!

I'm sorry, but my kid is the cutest in the whole world!

Christmas Letter

Dear Friends and Family,

Happy Holidays! If you read this blog you probably already know more about my life than you care too, but here is our Christmas letter for the time being.

Jared started his career this year! That's his biggest news. Even though it's been a long, hard road we are glad that he finished school in August. Even happier he finished with the highest score on the final exam. He was happy to get a job in NYC at Omega Boutique on 5th avenue near Central Park. It's a fun job in a beautiful building and he works with great people. He has rediscovered reading as he now has time on the trains to read, and is currently reading Les Miserables. He loves, loves, loves Paul and they are getting to be best friends, as Paul grows into a little boy.

It's been an interesting year for me. I was so happy that Paul got to spend time with both sets of grandparents, as well as the rest of the family while living in Utah, but I was glad to come home to be with Jared. I've been getting involved more in my ward, landing back in Primary, thank heavens as 1st counselor instead of President this time. Despite being in Primary, I have made some good friends in my ward, and we enjoy hanging out with our kids, or just us girls! (We all have only boy kiddos.) I have been crafting more this year and feel like I am really settling into our apartment. I hope to start substitute teaching starting in January.

Paul continues to amaze us with his amazing genius. (I can say that I'm his mom!) He knows all his letters, and although five gets left out regularly, he can count to 10. He has memorized parts of his favorite books and loves to read. We probably read about an hour a day total. In our ward we have 3 boys that were all born in the same month and another who is just six months older. He gets along with them really well, and it's fun for him (and me) to get out of the house and play with them at least once a week. He loves his daddy and copies everything he does. He has started to narrate everything he does, and it's pretty funny to hear the his imagination come out. We are going to start doing a co-op pre-school once or twice a week in January with his friends, and I am really excited!

We have been truly blessed as family this year. Many thanks to my parents for letting Paul and I live there while I was teaching in Draper, as well as supporting us every way they can. Many thanks to Jared's parents for their support, and for watching Paul when they could while I was there. We are glad to have our ward family out here to rely on, and feel the gospel enriches our lives in so many ways out here. Heavenly Father has blessed us more ways than I can count, somehow keeping our car running when logic defies that it should work. We feel the love and prayers of you, our wonderful family and friends, and hope you know that we love you and prayer for you often. I am sad to not be able to visit Utah this Christmas, but hope to see all y'all that live there soon. Our doors are always open, and we have lots of beds, and plenty of floor space for anyone that cares to visit!

We love you and hope you have a wonderful holiday season of joy and peace!

Love,
The Millers

Comings and Goings

This is often how I find Paul if I'm doing dishes or making dinner. Love it!

Stare down

Pumpkin carving wore him out, so he wanted to have a siesta on a paper towel roll. Okay...

Punkin Carving

A dog, a log, a noodle, a poodle

One of my favorite things about Paul right now is his imagination is just starting to come out more and more. While his mother only sees an empty fruit snack box, he turns it into a tunner (tunnel), a hang gwider, and birthday hat. It was everybody's birthday that night, including fire trucks, trains, and his motorcycle.

To Those Who Labor

To my husband who labors for me and Paul so that we have the life we have, so that I can stay home with Paul and that he supports me in doing that even though it means having less.

To my mom and dad, who have labored their whole life for me, and continue to support me even as I am a grown-up, who labored so I never wanted for anything.

To those who labor to protect our country, who put their lives on the line so I don't have to think about whether it's safe or not to go out of my home.

To those who have labored before me so that I can enjoy political and religious freedom.

THANK YOU! You are the people that I pattern my own life after, and who I think about everyday and love!

Can't resist

Paul found a microphone cord at Jared's graduation dinner. He loves to sing into anything that resembles a microphone. I don't know where the flair came from....Sam? Liz?

P.S. Sorry for sideways. I never think about it until it's too late. My camera doesn't flip videos.

Proof is in the pudding

Here are some of the pictures that go along with posts I've made. I found the camera cord....it was in the drawer I put it in. Good place for it huh?

The long of it

Here's the long version for the history books, and those of you who are trying to get out of doing something else by checking blogs.

Going back to Friday night of last week, my bishop asked if it was too late to ask me to give a talk on Sunday. Sure, no worries. Then it hits me that it really was. Oh well, too late now. I gave a talk on Self-Mastery and learned a lot.

Monday Jared didn't have to test until 2 pm so we slept in a little, then cleaned up the apartment and got it ready for our guests (Jared's parents, sister Jamie, and her baby William). Jared convinces me to go out for a quick lunch in my scrubs (which I generally don't leave the house in). He asks me if I will just drive him out to the test. Then convinces me it would be silly to drive home just to drive back (which is true, we were about 45 minutes from home) Only problem? I've got an antsy two year old who doesn't want to just sit still and wait for daddy to finish testing. I leave a message telling Jared that we are going to take the train home. (Which I was really going to do) While I'm walking to the train station I decide we'll hop on the light rail and go to Jared's mall instead. Yes, that is more public but it was better than the humidity! I try to message Jared after we get on the train that we will be back by the time he is done. Alas, I have no power left on my phone. Oh well, I'll be back in time. Long story short...I didn't. Jared thought I had gone home, so he left me in Weehawken. Back on the train we go to Hoboken, where I found a pay phone to let Jared know we weren't dead. Then onto the train to home. All in all I left the house in my scrubs and flip-flops with no diapers, or any other kiddo supplies at 12:30 and got home at 6:30. Sweet day.

Tuesday dawns bright and early with Paul awake at 3:30. Since Jared has to test later in the day, it's mommy's job to entertain and get back to sleep. He got back to sleep at 4:00ish after a complete bedtime routine (reading, scriptures, prayers, snuggles, singing, lights off) I was up again at 6:30 getting Jared's lunch ready to go and wishing him luck. Jared goes off to school to test and feels pretty good his performance that day. We run to Costco for supplies, and have a super fun time. We finish getting the apartment ready for our visitors.

The next day started early. I needed the car to pick up Jared's family from the airport, so we're all up early to make sure Jared is on time for his last day of school! Yes, we make it and he does great. I dropped Paul off at the babysitter's at 3 o clock(Thanks again Kluseys!). Come back to the house and put some finishing touches on the house. I head to the airport to find out the flight has been delayed almost an hour. Curse you busy NY area airports! I sit and wander, wander and sit, but mostly enjoy I can do whatever I want without worrying about Paul picking up something off the floor, or bashing someone with the stroller, or crazier things like get on the luggage carousel and somehow get out on the tarmac. It could happen...maybe. Jamie and William arrive at a different terminal about 15 minutes before Jan and Ralph's plane is scheduled to arrive. She waits while they taxi in, and while we get luggage. We pick up Jamie and Will, just in time for rush hour on the freeway, yahoo! We hop off the freeway a little soon, and take the back way home, which may have taken just as long, but at least we were moving. They drop off things, freshen up, then off to Charlie's Steakhouse for dinner. I drop them off, go get Jared from the train station, where da da da! he tells me he received a job offer for a place in Manhattan called Omega Boutique. It's on fancy-schmancy fifth avenue next to Trump Tower, Tiffany and Co, Henry Winston, etc. What I love is that's it's very near Central Park so we can meet him there when all he gets off work for a picnic dinner! Side note: We haven't actually accepted the job offer, so we may end up somewhere else, but most likely here. From the train station, we go pick up Paul two hours after I told them I would be back. Sorry Kluseys! Paul has a great time with Adrienne, a darling girl in our ward. Car load two back to Charlie's. We eat and present Jared with a watch from Paul and I for being so great, and for working so hard. Dinner is delicious and we are treated by Ralph and Jan....thank you! Girls and babies head home in the first car load. As the boys wander around Millburn waiting for the Miller taxi to return. Everybody's home. And scene.

Thursday we went into NYC and our first stop is Lincoln Center. As Ralph says, this is Jan's mecca. She was so thrilled to see Julliard and The Met. We go into the temple and visit with the missionaries there who are, surprise, from Salt Lake City! Jamie is able to feed baby Will (who at four months is such a trooper! and a porker ;-) ) and we explore the meetinghouse on the top level. Off we go to our favorite pub, The Emerald Inn for some lunch. Paul gets to play with Jasper the dog outside and gets treated to two Maraschino (sp?) cherries from Charlie the bartender. Across the street we discover Magnolia Bakery and our world will never be the same again. For those of you who come to visit that is a definite stop on our journey. We get almost back to the temple when we realize a backpack was left in the bakery (8 blocks back). The girls and babies find a pretty courtyard and relax. Paul naps in his stroller. We then discover Bed, Bath, and Beyond....three whole stories wall to wall. It really was BEYOND! Okay, everything recovered, on to Columbus Circle, quick stop at Tourneau (watch store), over to Carnegie Hall, then down to Times Square. Somehow or another, the Millers know someone who plays the piano at the Waldorf Astoria. We thought we'd try to see her. She was not there, but we left a note and quickly found a Subway restaurant to eat in as we were near perishing. Onto the train, and homeward bound. I think we walked about 10 miles today.

Friday it rains and pours and pours and rains. It seriously doesn't stop all day. Jared and Ralph went to school to clean out their desks of all their tools and magazines and manuals. They end up going to lunch with Jared's classmates one last time at Legend's Diner, a place they frequented enough, I think they have their own table. The girls and babies played at home and rested. When the boys got home Jan, Jamie, and I went off to do some shopping. A thrift store in my little town was having a 25 cent sale where a bunch of clothing and toys were 25 cents. (Really, thanks for pointing that out...) Jamie and I found a few cute things and a were most pleased about finding cheapo Halloween costumes for Paul (James the Tank Engine)
and Will (a big puffy pumpkin). Off to Kohl's for the lowest prices of the season sale. Ka-ching! Jamie finds some great post pregnancy clothes at good deals and I, sadly find nothing I can't live without. Back to the house just in time to get ready for Jared's graduation dinner. With a flurry of hairspray, make-up and the like, Jared drives the Miller's to the restaurant and Paul and I take the train, bonus for Paul...he does love a good train ride! We arrive right on time to a beautiful decorated private dining room. Immediately feel under dressed as the two other women are in cocktail dresses and I am only in dress pants. (Seriously, it's a graduation ceremony, dress up once in a while girlie! - If you keep talking to yourself people are going to think you're crazy.) Speeches given by The Head Honcho of Swatch group, who has flown in from Switzerland, the head of Swatch Group USA, and the head of Swatch Group Secaucus. Paul is excited to clap and shout yeah! all the time, whether it's appropriate or not. (Babysitter? Think about it.) The graduates receive their diploma's and WOSTEP certification. No I don't remember what it means. Two special awards are given. One is to Mr. Martinez for having the highest average on test scores throughout the two years. The other is given for being the most spirited, willing to help, and for having the highest test scores on the final exam.........WAY TO GO MR. MILLER! (Yes, they call each other Mr. _____. It's a Swiss Watchmaking thing. ) He is shocked, I am not. He worked so hard and studied so long, I am so proud of him. He received a 250 dollar visa card and a bottle of Champagne. (Which he passes onto his teacher with a chuckle.) Dinner is divine, as we sit with two very sociable and funny gentlemen from the corporate offices. I had Lemon Chicken, Jared has the steak. We wait long enough for the cookies to arrive, then grab our Peace Lily that each graduate received and Jared takes Jan, Paul, and I to the train station for a ride home. He drives Jamie, Will, and Ralph to the train station to come pick us up. We SQUEEEZE in and drive home, only to discover a checkpoint charlie. Thinking they won't appreciate two extra people in a car, and a two year old in no car seat, we successfully navigate around the police checkpoint to our apartment. (It's opening weekend at Seton Hall University so we think they are just making sure the freshmen don't go overboard their first taste of freedom.) SCIENCE! It's time for bed. (Thanks Dallin!)

Poor Jamie and William are up at 5:00 am to head to Salt Lake so she can pack up their car to drive home to San Diego on Sunday so the kids can start school on Monday. What a great sister she is to come and be here for Jared! Jan and I drop her off amid pouring rain at the airport. Back home and back to bed for me. We hang around at home for a little while the rain keeps pouring down. We decide to brave the rain anyway, drive to Jared's mall to hop on the Path train. While at the mall, I stop and buy an umbrella, which of course is the signal for the rain to stop. We start our visiting at the World Trade Center Site. There isn't much to see, besides cranes and tarped fences. We take a short walk to Century 21, the department store. It's a crazy madhouse, pyscho shopping fest, so we only stay a few minutes. We walk up to Trinity church and saunter down Wall Street taking in the sites, seeing where George Washington was sworn in as first president. (I think) Off to a little side street for some delicious NY Pizza and Lentil Soup with no actual Lentil's in it. Paul sleeps for approx. 15 minutes and decides that is his nap for the day. We say farewell to downtown and head to midtown for a long walk to the USS Intrepid. Grandpa shows us different planes and what unique features they have. Paul gets to fly in a plane simulator.
After the USS Intrepid everyone is tired so we walk a short distance up to the NY Waterways and take a ferry over to Weehawken, then the light rail to Jersey City where the car is. Much better than walking all the way back to Penn Station. We may have been able to take a bus, but Paul does love boats, and it was nice to be out on the water. Paul falls asleep on the light rail and is out for the rest of the night. He doesn't wake up at the Taqueria (yummy mexican food), or in the car on the way home, or even when I change him and put him in bed. What a long week for bubba. I feel it too. So off to bed. There you have it.

I hope I find my camera cord soon, so I have real pictures instead of these from my phone!

A quickie

Just a short post to let you know Jared received a job offer here in Manhattan which we are thrilled about. We may stay in our same apartment or look for something closer to the city so the commute isn't so long. He received a passing grade on his written and three practical tests! Way to go love! We are so proud of you!

Go green

with envy! My baby is now a boy. Wishing I had pictures for proof, but I can't find our camera cord. Thanks to our friends the De Jong's, Paul took two big steps into being a big boy. They gave us their twin bunk beds and a bike with training wheels. He loves his big bike, and it has a bell and everything. It needs a little oil on the chain to make it easier to pedal, but he does pretty well with it.

I was nervous about his transition to a big boy bed since it 1)doesn't have a rail to hold him in, and 2)I didn't want it to take forever and a day to get him adjusted to not getting out of bed. Luckily, I have the best boy ever. I got it put together in the afternoon and got ready for a long night. He got out 6 times the first night. Thanks to Super Nanny Jo Frost, the next night, it was only once and when he saw me, he ran back to his room and hopped back in. No troubles since then! Yahoo for Paul being so easy, peasy! I am soooo lucky!

In unrelated news, Jared is done with the written portion of his watchmaking test. Tomorrow he will start the technical portion of the testing that will last for two days. If only we had a job to go to after he graduates on Friday! We are still praying and waiting!

Quote of the day

Mom: Who's that?
Paul: Duper Duper Jesus

Couldn't have said it better myself. For those that need translating, we recently caught an episode of Super Why (cartoon) and suddenly everything that he loves or is great is duper, duper. We're still working on the S's.....

Our quick trip to Philly!

Jared had the day off today, so we took a little road trip to Philadelphia. Our desire to sleep in, combined with our general laziness, as well as killer traffic, we didn't get into town until about 5:30. Believe it or not, most all the sights were closed, so we wandered and took pictures from outside. We did get to see the Liberty Bell which was cool, and Benjamin Franklin's gravesite. It's an interesting feeling to walk where our forefathers walked.

Jersey Girl once more

No, I have not fallen off the planet, just relocated, and today I have finally dug myself out of the boxes, suitcases, and the mess that happens when your husband is a temporary bachelor. YAHOO! A laundromat just opened two blocks from our house. That may not seem to be such fantastic news, but it opens a whole new world for Paul and I. It means he can ride his motorcycle there, we can put the clothes in, he can ride his motorcycle home, get a snack, and ride over to switch the clothes. And it means I don't wait so long to do laundry since I don't have to devote an entire afternoon to loading it all up, making sure it's the right time for Paul (not hungry, sleepy, or cranky) I feel FREEEEEE! Yikes, pretty sad when that is what is exciting to me.

I've been using FlyLady.net to help me get organized since I was really overwhelmed and it seems to be working. I also set six goals for myself everyday. Spiritual first, physical, educational, financial, housekeeping, and sitting down with Paul and really teaching him something on purpose. I am amazed at what I get done when I have it written in my planner, and I can give myself a little "Check!" You know like when you do something good, you give yourself a little "Check!"

We are so happy to be back together as a family, and it was hard to send Jared off to Utah for his grandfather's funeral on Friday. Paul can't quite figure out why daddy always has to be a plane ride away, but hopefully we are done with that after Jared gets back on Sunday!

THANK YOU so much to those who helped me get in the air and back home. You are wonderful friends and family and I love ya!

Grandpa and Grandma Brown

Because we were so busy Memorial Day, and because my grandparents birthdays happen to fall this week (Grandma Saturday and Grandpa tomorrow) we decided to head up to their gravesite to spend a few minutes with them this evening. As I sat there with three of their kids, about five of their grandkids, and about ten great-grandkids, I began to think.

Because I think that if after I'm gone, my family can get together at the drop of a hat, and be in each others lives, and love each other no matter what, and have best friends in their sisters, and cousins, and second cousins, then I will have done a good job. I know that there are times when my mom and her sisters disagree (can you imagine 5 women always agreeing?) but I also know that I long for that strength that comes with having four other women in your life, that will always be there for you, and love you, and love your kids. And knowing that I could go to anyone of my aunts (or uncles, I love you guys too!) and get the same advice and support and love that I would get from my own mother. I am truly lucky to have the best family in the world, and I know that it didn't happen without work. Grandma and Grandpa always made sure that we knew that we were part of a family. And that family was were we should look for everything. Friendship, love, support, encouragement, and example.

So again, I say, if there is one thing that will help me to raise my own family, (I hope Paulie isn't the only one!) it is to look to grandma and grandpa's example, and the example of those who have made family a priority in my own life. Because everything falls into place if you can do that.

Thank you to Grandma and Grandpa for the legacy you have given us, your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. (Are there great-greats yet?)

Sorry to be so sappy, I think it's time for me to go home to my sweet husband. I'm a little emotional about family right now!

Shirley J

For those who don't know, I've signed up to purchase and sell Shirley J products. The things we have tried so far have been delicious; yummy cheese nacho sauce, broccoli cream sauce, and as a base to my aunt's enchiladas. My mom bought one of everything so we are going to be experimenting a little bit to find out the best recipe's. I'll be documenting success (and failures!) on my new blog dinnerontime.blogspot.com so check it out if you have the time!

Spring Break

Tim, Brandi, Jamie and Traivs came to visit us this weekend. Brandi's sister and her husband, Jamie and Travis, live in Philadelphia right now. Tim and Brandi have been visiting them for a week and a half. They came to New Jersey on Thursday and spent the day in New York City. They came and stayed at our house that night, then we all went to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Times Square, Grimaldi's (best pizza ever), and the Conservatory Gardens in Central Park on Friday. We were lucky that it only rained for about 10 minutes, even though it was supposed to rain all afternoon. They were lovely house guests, and we hope to go visit Jamie and Travis soon and see their amazing city!

Baseball Fever

Paul is getting into spring training. Do you think he has a future in baseball?

Pirate NO FEAR Paul

Seriously, he is balancing on the back of the chair. If he could say, "Hey, watch this" like his dad does before he does something ridiculous he would. Here are some of the things he does say:
woo woo: train
pulpul: purple
boo: blue
cai coke: diet coke (wonder where he learned that!)
word: only to be said while making some sort of gang sign
car: car
room room papa with hand signals: motorcycle
papa: grandpa
daeee: daddy
awa: grandma
am: Sam
Yee: Liz
at: Matt
coter: helicopter (and when asked who drives it he know it's "at")
woun and woun: you know, what the wheels on the bus do or anything else spinning
dooo: Fins, Noggins, Dude

Just in case your curious

This is what a reaction to Amoxicillan looks like in a Paulwog.  He had an ear infection on Martin Luther King Jr. Day so we went and got some antibiotics.  He took those until Sunday morning when we started to notice some spots on his legs.  Since I wasn't sure what it was, I gave him some Benedryl and we stayed home from church.  After his nap, he woke up with about double the spots. I called his doctor and he said it was probably a reaction to his antibiotic.  He said he would call in a prescription for a medicine to help clear it up.  I asked if we should come in the next morning anyway. and he said that would be fine.  So Monday morning dawned and we took this picture of Pauly to document his first real scare-mom-out-of-her-mind illness. Dr. Hafen walked in and said wow. Apparently he thought I was exaggerating the night before.  He gave Paul some prescription strength anti-histamine and I gave him the prescription that had been called in the night before.  By that afternoon, he looked a lot better. By Tuesday he had cleared up completely. It was great to be able to stay home with him on Monday, and I really appreciate what a trooper he is.  He was his usual crazy self through the whole thing.

Yes friends, Jared and I have been officially married 5 years. We celebrated by being 2000 miles apart! Yahoo! Seriously, the night before he left we went to Tucano's and ate ourselves sick. I also got a pair of Born shoes, and Jared got pants, shirt, and part of his Power Juicer was his anniversary present. A few memories of our time together:

Our wedding: What a rockin party! I hate to tell you, but I mostly remember just Jared from that night. I recall there were other people there...

Helping with grandma and grandpa: His patience when mine was gone, and his willingness to do anything whether he felt it was ridiculous or not.

Pregnancy: Seeing him fully grasp what that meant, and pampering me EVERY day...I mean it. He really did.

Our trip across the country: I couldn't believe how much fun we had. There is nothing better than being on an adventure with your best friend. (And a little guy... he was less fun, although such a trooper.)

Everyday: Watching him with Paul. Two closer peas in a pod you can't find. Even with Paul growing up far away from his daddy, he still manages to make Jared's faces, be smart like his dad, and make me smile everyday too.

Everyday: Texting "good morning" to me every morning, loving me for who I am, and being there through this particularly hard time in our short life together.

I was adamant I was not going to do a mushy, gushy post for all the world to see, but it didn't seem right to not pay this small tribute to my love.
